Mission of the ChurchMay 15th, 2008What is the mission of the church? What is to engage its interest? Paul tells Timothy that the church is the pillar and ground of the truth (1 Tim 3:15). Together these represent the spiritual structure which is the church, which provides protection for the soul of man. In “The Revelation” John sees 7 golden lamp stands and one in their midst holding 7 stars in his right hand. In his explanation the lamp stands are churches. Again—lamp stands held the light aloft for all to see. The light which shines forth from the church is found in scripture. Jesus said, “Search the scriptures; for in them you think you have eternal life and they are they that testify of me.” Those he addressed rejected Him and scripture’s testimony of Him. They were wrong in their interpretation. The same injunction is enjoined upon us. We must “search the scriptures”. What the scriptures say, we must believe and do; what they forbid we must leave alone. The church must be engaged in finding the truth and then proclaiming it in ways made available to it. Truth will direct man to God—both for now and for the hereafter. |
